gender & coffee

i have just found out that people expected women/girls to drink only sweet coffee in my town.

this afternoon i went to starbucks with my brother & sister. he ordered black, espresso con panna for me and espresso americano for her.
the cashier guy said: you guys really do like coffee, dontcha?
me thinking: huh????? yeah.... we do come here for the coffee. its kinda lame for me, but that’s okay ‘cause i dont want to stay up all night anyway.
when we pick up our order from the barista, he said:
have you been here before? have you ever tried espresso before?
it’s like: are you sure?
i was totally puzzled. something is not right here.
of course i can stand some starbucks espresso. i may not a coffee freak, but i drink kopi tubruk at home, and its indonesian variety. java arabican. geez. what’s with all the fuss?

my sister then explained things. she said that she used to that. the waiter always put a cup of her male friend’s cappucino in front of her instead of the espresso she ordered. and when she ordered one, the waiter often warns her that it’s bitter. she said that she often gets the puzzled look when she ordered sugarless coffee.
hmmm.... is that so? how peculiar....
